In the late 1990s, Loris Degioanni, senior director of engineering at Riverbed and the creator of WinPcap, was a student at Politecnico di Torino in Italy and wanted to create a tool to capture network traffic from students’ Windows machines. Ultimately it led to the creation of WinPcap, an open source Windows capture library based on libpcap.
